The Minnie Evans Bottle Chapel at Airlie Gardens in Wilmington, NC.

This 16-foot bottle and cement structure was designed by local artist, Virginia Wright-Frierson, in honor of the late Minnie Evans.  Evans was a visionary artist herself who worked at Airlie Gardens.  The images portrayed in the Bottle Chapel were inspired by Evans’ work.

Please take a few minutes to watch the following video, narrated by Virginia herself.  She offers insight into specific features of sculpture and surrounding garden.

    • I’m glad you think so and I agree! This may be just a folk tale, but supposedly the artist went out to check on the sculpture during a hurricane and she could hear the bottles making music as the strong winds blew around her. I have visited the Bottle Chapel several times and created musical tones on the bottles with my hands, so I wouldn’t be surprised if it was really true!

    • It is so heartwarming to know it had such an effect on you! Thank you for letting me know and I really hope you get to visit the Bottle House someday in my hometown of Wilmington, NC. 🙂
